Saturday COCAcademy with Nick Teich, PhD, LCSW

November 15 @ 9:00 am - 4:30 pm EST

Join us for an immersive COCAcademy workshop hosted by Dr. Nick Teich!

Session 1: How to Build Robust and Helpful Leadership Teams

This session will focus on both the composition of a winning leadership team as well as how to divide and conquer. Directing camps has gotten more difficult and attention to detail is key; you can’t do this without a team that can bring different perspectives to the table and work cohesively.

Session 2:  How to Partner with Parents During Camp

This session will focus on balancing compassion for parents who are sending their children with cancer away from home with allowing those parents to give their children independence in a safe, nurturing environment. How is your camp setting up parental expectations? Do they understand your safety protocols? How do you work together with parents while maintaining the boundaries of camp? For those who run family camps or want to add family camps, how do you work with families to set up a good relationship?

Session 3: Staff Burnout and “Remembering the Why”

This session will focus on young volunteers and staff, and how to prepare them for working at camp. What about the emotional side? How can you handle staff who need lots of hand-holding and staff who don’t want help with anything, and get them to an in-between place? How do you set them up for success in the long-term? Additionally, I’ll be discussing how best to balance your time and try to minimize burnout in both staff and camp directors.

Session 4: Mental Health at Camp

Every camp is dealing with a rise in mental health issues for campers and staff. For vulnerable or traumatized populations, these issues can be exacerbated. How can you put together policies and protocols for dealing with mental health events? How can you train your staff to deal with them in real-time? What decisions can you make about staff who are experiencing these issues?
